One of my first blogs, back in January 2014 (entitle “I Come Alive“) I shared my love for a song by Kari Jobe called “Run To You (I Need You)” and I described the lyrics as “the kind of prayer I want to pray all throughout the day, every day; it’s the kind of prayer that sets the day right – puts things into perspective and helps me keep my eyes fixed on Jesus.”
Well I’ve fallen in love with another song with a similar prayer. This one is off Bethel Music’s album “Here Is Love”, it’s sung by Kim Walker (of Jesus Culture fame) and it’s called “I Need You More.”
The lyrics are so simple, and repetitive, and yet they are perhaps the most powerful of prayers. It is when we meet God in our need, when we recognize our utter dependence on Him that we can readily receive His grace. And when we are able to receive His grace it transforms us. In Luke 7:36-48 Jesus teaches a wealthy man and a sinful woman that those who are forgiven much, love much. The greater the debt you’ve been forgiven the greater you are able to love God. My college pastor, Dave Cox, used to say “we can only love God as much as we understand His love for us.”
Lord, help me to understand to a greater degree my need for you, and the depths of your love for me, so that I may love You more!!
If you want your love for God to grow, recognize, admit and focus on the depth of your debt.
I could sing this song over and over again…I guess that’s why the recording is 9:00 minutes long! There’s no better place to be than kneeling at the feet of God, acknowledging the greatness of your need to be forgiven, and receiving that forgiveness!
Try singing along with this song, but inserting your own lyrics when it says “more than ________”. How can you express to God your need and your desire for Him? What is He worth to you? More than chocolate? More than TV? More than the house you live in? More than financial security? What do you need Him more than?
And then join in the fun when Kim begins to sing her spontaneous prayer to God at minute 5:20. Tell God what you’re feeling. Tell Him what you want from Him. Tell Him how much you love Him…in your own words.
I Need You More
I need You more, More than yesterday
I need You more, More than words can say
I need You more, Than ever before
I need You Lord, I need You Lord
More than the air I breathe
More than the song I sing
More than the next heartbeat
More than anything
And Lord as time goes by, I’ll be by Your side
‘Cause I never want to go back, To my old life
Right here in Your presence, Is where I belong
This old broken heart, Has fin’lly found a home
And I’ll never be alone
We give You the highest praise
We give You the highest praise
We give You the highest praise
We give You the highest praise
